Piers Morgan says Edu Gaspar made the ‘best signing’ of the century before he left Arsenal

Edu Gaspar did a lot of good work during his time at Arsenal.

The Brazilian joined the Gunners as their first-ever technical director in the summer of 2019, and he was then promoted to become the sporting director just under three years later.

Edu resigned from his role at Arsenal last year and is currently the Global Sports Director of Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs, which includes Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal fans haven’t missed Edu because of Andrea Berta’s brilliance, but many of his signings are thriving at the Emirates. Declan Rice is one of them.

Piers Morgan says Declan Rice is Arsenal’s ‘best signing’ of this century

Arsenal signed Rice from West Ham United in the summer of 2023.

The Englishman had decided to leave the Hammers in that window after helping them win the UEFA Conference League. A number of clubs were keen to sign him, including Manchester City.

However, Mikel Arteta convinced Rice to join Arsenal, and Edu struck a £105 million deal with West Ham to land him.

The midfielder has barely put a foot wrong in the famous red and white. He has been so good that nobody has even mentioned his price tag.

Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan is a massive fan of Rice and has now hailed him as the club’s best signing of this century.

Explaining why Arsenal could win the Premier League and Champions League this season, he said on talkSPORT: “I think that our record defensively this season is statistically better than anybody else in the world. We have got a fantastic defence.

“I also think we’ve now got at least two great players in every position. So, if Saka is injured, in comes Madueke. You know, if Martinelli’s injured, in comes Trossard. You’ve got in the middle Declan Rice, probably the best signing Arsenal have made this century.

“You’ve got Zubimendi, a great little ball carrier. You’ve got Eze to come in if Odegaard’s injured. Eze just seamlessly takes over, and conversely, the other way around. I just think you put it all together. We’ve now just got amazing depth.”

Morgan’s claim about Rice caught Alan Brazil’s attention. He asked: “Is Rice a better signing than Henry?”

He replied: “Well, we signed Henry just before this century. That’s why I said this century. Henry, Bergkamp and Vieira are the best of the last century.”

Is Declan Rice Mikel Arteta’s best signing at Arsenal?

Mikel Arteta has made a number of brilliant signings at Arsenal.

The Spaniard has been in the job for nearly six years now, and most of the players he has brought in have been successful.

Rice is definitely one of his top recruits, but if we had to pick one, we think Gabriel Magalhaes is Arteta’s best signing as the Arsenal manager.

The Brazilian has been incredible for the Gunners and has come a long way since he arrived in 2020. He is among the best defenders in the world today and would walk into any big side.

Rice deserves immense praise too and would rank second on our list of Arteta’s best signings as the Gunners boss.
