PL midfielder now gives verdict on Arsenal chances in title race after ‘huge’ win

Arsenal’s victory over Liverpool was significant for several reasons and was the centre of attention in the Premier League over the last week.

It was a win which saw Arsenal dominate Jurgen Klopp’s side, and close the gap between the two teams from five points to two.

Ahead of the game, it was clear that if Arsenal were to lose at home against the league leaders, then their title challenge would almost certainly be finished.

Defeats against West Ham and Fulham in December saw Arsenal surrender their position at the top of the league, and midfielder Tom Cairney played a huge part in their loss at Craven Cottage.

Tom Cairney gives verdict on Arsenal title chances

Cairney, who provided the assist for Raul Jimenez’s first-half equaliser in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at Fulham, has now praised Arsenal for beating Liverpool, but admitted that he could not see Mikel Arteta’s side winning the title.

“I think performance-wise they were better this season than last season, to be honest,” Cairney stated on The Players Channel.

“I think that game at the weekend was huge for Arsenal, I think that’s why the celebrations were so big.

“In my opinion, if they had lost that game I don’t think they would have had much chance of catching Liverpool, I can’t see them losing three or four more games until the end of the season with the squad they have got, it’s frightening. So I think you could tell how big it was for Arsenal.

“Arsenal will be up there but I think it’s Liverpool or Man City’s (title).”

Are Arsenal in the title race?

Despite Arsenal’s victory over Liverpool, most are still backing Manchester City to win the league ahead of both teams.

City have won the last three league titles in a row, and are now in an incredibly strong position with Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland returning to fitness.

Arsenal kept themselves in the race with the victory over Liverpool, and there is still a long way to go in a season where they have to keep pace with two top teams.

If they are able to beat Man City at the Etihad Stadium later this season, they will give themselves a shot at the title. However, Arsenal have never won there during Pep Guardiola’s reign, and it will be a tough ask to beat his side to Premier League glory this season.
