Theo Walcott reveals he almost came out of retirement this summer
Theo Walcott is part of Arsenal’s 100 club.
The winger found the back of the net 108 times for the Gunners, with this tally placing him 10th in the North London club’s all-time goalscoring list.
A blistering wide man in his day, the Englishman was also lethal in front of goal, and continued to boast this proficiency inside the box until the day he retired in 2023.
He could certainly still add value to a club at a certain level, even though he hung up his boots two years ago, and has now actually revealed that he considered doing so over the summer.
Walcott went on Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the US as an ambassador of the club, and was in contact with former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, who now coaches Charlotte FC.
“I remember when I was out in the States actually on pre-season tour with Arsenal, right?” Walcott said on the Overlap US.
“I actually said, ‘Oh, I might come out of retirement’ just to play for, in fact, it was Dean Smith at Charlotte FC, funnily enough.
“And really, I thought, don’t ever make decisions when you’re away on holiday or you’re not at home. I said, if I still feel like this when I’m at home. Then I will. Obviously, I didn’t make that decision.”
Theo Walcott would have thrived playing under Mikel Arteta
Walcott played alongside Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.
The two players spent five years together in North London between 2011 and 2016, before the Spaniard retired and went to deputise Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The former Southampton star will undoubtedly wish he could have spent a few years in his prime under the guidance of Arteta as a coach.
In the latter stages of Arsene Wenger’s tenure at the Emirates, Arsenal became an unorganised side that lacked offensive patterns of play.
Under Arteta, structured attacks are certainly an aspect of the Gunners’ game, and Walcott would’ve thrived playing with these plans in place.
Exceptional at timing his runs in behind, Arteta would’ve created patterns that would’ve platformed this strength of Walcott’s, and he arguably would’ve subsequently been even more prolific than he already was.
