Arsenal have not had the greatest track record in the transfer market when it comes to selling players.
Historically, Arsenal have sold players for much less than their true market value. Players such as Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie were deals that could have demanded much higher transfer fees than the club accepted.
In recent years, there has been a slight improvement under Mikel Arteta, in the summer Emile Smith-Rowe and Eddie Nketiah both departed for significant fees which were more representative of their talent and potential.
However, some of the past Arsenal decisions are still coming back to haunt them and former Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel has been discussing one of those mistakes from the Gunners.

Kasper Schmeichel reveals Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez mistake
Speaking on the latest edition of the Stick to Football podcast, Kasper Schmeichel, who won the Premier League with Leicester City, has been discussing his thoughts on former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Schmeichel stated: “I think if you look at someone like Emi Martinez, the career that he’s had, to get the chance he then had later in his career, it’s as if he’s put on a cloak and now he is bulletproof. Invincible. He is invincible now. And that chest forward now, he’s unbeatable and he’s one of the best in the world.”
The Danish keeper, now showcasing his ability in Scotland for Celtic, claimed that the Argentine keeper never really got his chance at Arsenal and that was a mistake.
Schmeichel explained: “But that transformation from the guy who was on loan at all these places and never really getting a shot at Arsenal to then going and being the main man for Argentina and Aston Villa, that’s a mentality shift.”
Arsenal’s David Raya is outperforming Martinez this season
Whilst there is no doubting Martinez’s talents and he has proven himself on the world stage by winning the World Cup with Argentina, Arsenal’s current keeper David Raya has proven himself to be just as good, if not better than the Villa man.
Petr Cech praised Raya for his distribution and the Spanish international has outperformed Martinez in a number of key areas this season.
| Key statistics this season (per 90) | Martinez | Raya |
| Goals against | 1.52 | 0.85 |
| Save percentage | 64% | 75.9% |
| Clean sheet percentage | 10.7% | 37% |
| Progressive passes | 2 | 11 |
Raya has conceded fewer goals, made more successful saves and importantly for how Arteta plays, the Spaniard is adept at finding those line breaking passes to begin the Gunners attacks.
Arsenal fans enjoyed Raya’s tackle against West Ham recently and there have been a number of important moments in the sticks this season from the 29-year-old goalkeeper.
Martinez has had an excellent career since leaving the Emirates Stadium however, the Gunners won’t be looking back with any regret with their current shot stopper taking the Premier League by storm.
