Nick Ramsdale, father of Aaron Ramsdale, has called on Arsenal fans to show support for David Raya.

Arsenal signed goalkeeper David Raya on a season-long loan deal from fellow Premier League outfit Brentford in the recent summer transfer window. The north London club are set to shell out £27 million to make the Spaniard’s move to the club permanent.

Aaron Ramsdale was the established Arsenal No. 1 last season, generally impressing and solidifying his status as a fan favourite as the club mounted an unexpected title challenge.

However, shortly after his arrival at Arsenal, Raya usurped Ramsdale as the first choice between the sticks.

Since then, aside from a couple of outings in the EFL Cup, Ramsdale has had to satisfy himself with a place on the bench. Meanwhile, Raya has gradually grown into his role at Arsenal.

Ramsdale has spoken out publicly about the pain that slipping down the Arsenal pecking order has caused him. His father, Nick Ramsdale, has also discussed the challenges facing the 25-year-old.

Arsenal fans must put support of David Raya above loyalty to Aaron Ramsdale

However, Ramsdale’s father holds no ill will towards Raya. Discussing the Arsenal goalkeeper situation on The Highbury Squad, he said, “David Raya is a great goalkeeper and it is not his fault. He’s just come in as a goalkeeper. David Raya, Aaron says, he is a lovely guy and he works hard with him and Aaron’s trying to help him as much as he can to settle in with the squad.”

“Really and truly, we’ve got to get behind David Raya. He’s part of the family now.”

Ramsdale has a responsibility, as a professional footballer and member of the Arsenal squad, to support his teammates, even one who is keeping him out of the team. Goalkeepers, especially, due to the unique nature of their position, have to have each other’s back and work together as a unit on the training pitch.

Whilst Ramsdale is popular with the Arsenal fans, the Emirates Stadium faithful also just want to see the team be successful on the pitch. Mikel Arteta clearly feels that Raya gives the Gunners their best chance of achieving their aims this season. If the Spanish coach is proven correct on that point then the fans will celebrate his decision to drop Ramsdale.
