Arsenal technical director Edu Gaspar forced Willian to agree to one key condition before terminating his contract.
The Brazilian attacker still had two years left on his deal. He was on mammoth wages and it made no financial sense whatsoever for him to tear up his contract and walk away, foregoing a staggering £20 million. (Sky Sports)
Reports claimed that Arsenal directors are amazed by Willian’s gesture to waive off the money he’s owed. He has been receiving a ton of praise for his decision, but tearing up his contract was not the only thing Edu asked him to do.
Edu’s key condition to let Willian leave Arsenal
Brazilian outlet UOL have shed some more light on the negotiations between Arsenal and Willian before he ripped up his deal and moved to Sao Paulo to join Corinthians.
The report claims that although Edu wanted his compatriot to leave, the Arsenal technical director was unwilling to let him join any other club in the country. Only when Willian agreed to that condition, the papers were signed and his contract was terminated.
Apart from waiving off the £20 million Arsenal owed him, Willian has also agreed to take a 70 per cent pay-cut to join Corinthians. This just shows that all the talk in the media about the Brazilian’s intentions were as false as anything could ever be.
