Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya started for Spain in their victory over Denmark, and he certainly gave a good account of himself.

Although Raya is Arsenal’s firmly established number-one goalkeeper, he played a backup role to Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon as Spain won Euro 2024.

With Simon now injured, Raya has earned more starts for Spain, and was selected in their Nations League victory over Denmark, in a game in which Mikel Merino impressed in midfield.

Despite Denmark scoring after an error between Fabian Ruiz and the Arsenal goalkeeper, Raya was praised in Spain for his performance, which also saw him make a crucial last-minute save.

Arsenal fans have been impressed with Raya this season, and Spain fans are now starting to see why.

Spain fans call for Arsenal star David Raya to become number one goalkeeper

Spain fans were so impressed with Raya that they now believe that he should usurp Simon as their number one, taking to X to praise the Arsenal star.

“The best goalkeeper we have and he was a substitute… You just have to see his games in the Premier League,” one fan posted.

“It’s just a matter of time before David Raya puts an end to the debate about who should be the starting goalkeeper for the Spanish national team. Another great game today against Denmark with a very good save in stoppage time. He is notably superior to Unai Simón,” another added.

“The level of David Raya and Pedro Porro is spectacular, they had not been able to demonstrate it until now because they had Unai and Carvajal ahead of them,” a third fan added, highlighting how Raya was benched at Euro 2024.

Arsenal fans who were watching were also impressed by Raya, as he continued his fine club form.

“David Raya is such a well rounded GK. Offers a wide range of qualities. One area I believe he can improve on is his ground passing into central spaces when under pressure. Granted you can find clips of him excelling here, but I do think he isn’t the most confident in this aspect,” an Arsenal fan pointed out.

“I’m going to say it now; I have seen Ederson, Neuer & Allison, but Raya is by far the best GK with his feet. It’s like he a deep-lying playmaker. His passes today were ridiculous,” another claimed.

“Best keeper in the league thus far, or certainly thereabouts. He’s gone to another level compared to last season,” another Arsenal fan added.

David Raya’s excellent development at Arsenal

The Spaniard initially struggled when he joined Arsenal last year, and there was huge pressure on him as Raya replaced popular goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

He has since hit incredible heights, and has produced some important saves for Arsenal. He stopped two penalties as Arsenal beat Porto in the Champions League last season, and Raya’s double-save against Aston Villa helped secure all three points.

Raya has arguably been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season, and he has also been a figure of consistent excellence in Arsenal’s back line, which has been subjected to a lot of injury absences this season.
