However, undoubtedly Arsenal’s best midfielder of the modern era is Patrick Vieira.

Vieira was an all-action midfielder who could do everything. He was an incredible leader for Arsenal and he took the club to new heights.

Of course, you can’t talk about Vieira without discussing his biggest rival – Roy Keane.

Speaking to Goal, Steven Gerrard has been comparing some Premier League greats, and he actually chose between both Keane and Vieira.

Gerrard was asked to pick between Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane.

The Liverpool legend has had famous battles against both players, but ultimately, he picked Keane ahead of Vieira.

Gerrard would go on to choose Keane ahead of both Eric Cantona and Frank Lampard, highlighting just how highly the former England captain rates the Manchester United legend.

In the early and mid 2000s the Premier League was packed full of world class midfield talent.

Steven Gerrard, Patrick Vieira, Roy Keane, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes are all bona fide greats of the game, and they were the flag bearers for their respective teams.

Gerrard, of course, played against both Vieira and Keane on numerous occasions, and he has an interesting record against the pair.

Remarkably, despite Liverpool’s struggles to win league titles during this period, Gerrard has a winning record against both Keane and Vieira.

Gerrard’s record against Keane is slightly better than his record against Vieira, but, he still rates the Irishman as the better player.

The Vieira vs Keane debate is one that has raged on for years, and while Gerrard picked Keane over Vieira, you’d be hard pressed to find any Arsenal fans who agree with his opinion here.
