Arsenal’s search for a new central midfielder this summer could take them to Brazilian star, Ederson.

With the Gunners already in search of new recruits, Ederson is being linked with a move to Arsenal as his Atalanta contract enters its final year.

Ederson has been linked with a move to England before. Both Tottenham and Newcastle admire the Brazilian, with Arsenal also now joining that queue.

Indeed, when you look back at what was said about Ederson amid his links to Newcastle, it makes nice reading for us Arsenal fans.

What Tim Vickery said when he first saw Ederson play football

Tim Vickery is one of the big experts in South American football and his view is always interesting when it comes to players from that continent.

Ederson is no different.

Speaking on the midfielder back in 2024, it’s clear that the Arsenal target impressed.

“He’s a strong, well-built central midfielder,” Vickery said previously for Sky Sports. “He’s strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box and has a strong personality as well.

“The first thing I remember about him is his professional debut for Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide at the time.

“They were relegated in dreadful form but even in that bad context, he stood out.

“So, a lot of virtues and I just wonder if all these virtues may remind you of another Brazilian already wearing the shirt of Newcastle.

“You could see this either as back-up in the squad to Bruno Guimaraes, or, with Newcastle being under pressure with financial fair play, and potential big-money offers coming in for Bruno Guimaraes, you could see him as a possible replacement.”

Arsenal, of course, have an abundance of talent in midfield already but it’s a fair argument to say they don’t have that ‘destroyer’ type player.

Indeed, not since the days of a Patrick Vieira or a Gilberto Silva have Arsenal really had this sort of player.

With Ederson available for around the £40m mark, there is clearly value to be had in his signing.

And as Vickery says here, his profile is that of a top midfield player.
