Declan Rice was mobbed by his Arsenal teammates after he scored a last-gasp winner against Luton Town.

As the six minutes of added-on time at Kenilworth Road elapsed on Tuesday evening, Arsenal looked certain to drop points against Luton Town. In a final throw of the dice, Martin Odegaard swung in a cross, and with the final touch of the match, Declan Rice was able to flick the ball into the back of the net.

The goal confirmed a 4-3 win for the Gunners, and heartbreak for the Hatters. The win also extended the north London club’s lead at the top of the Premier League table. With 15 matches played, Arsenal are two points ahead of second placed Liverpool, and six points clear of reigning champions Manchester City.

Rice’s goal against Luton sent the travelling Arsenal fans into raptures. The players celebrated with the supporters for an extended period after the final whistle, before taking the party atmosphere back into the dressing room.

In the confines of the dressing room, Rice was the focus of the festivities. As revealed by journalist Sami Mokbel, “Declan Rice was serenaded by his Arsenal team-mates in the away dressing room following his last gasp winner at Luton…no prizes for guessing what was sung…‘Stop! Collaborate…’”

Clearly, the Arsenal players dusted off the Vanilla Ice hit from 1990, ‘Ice Ice Baby’, which was presumably reworked to include Rice’s name. It is unclear at this stage if Mikel Arteta joined in with the chorus.

Declan Rice further underlines his importance to Arsenal

Of course, this isn’t the first time Rice has popped up with a last minute winner. He did the same thing against Manchester United earlier this season.

Rice wasn’t necessarily signed for his prowess in front of goal, but Arteta has used him in more advanced roles at times this season. The 24-year-old midfielder has publicly discussed the challenge that has been set for him of becoming more impactful in the final third. He certainly seems to have made significant progress in that regard.

The Gunners paid a club-record fee of £105 million in the recent summer transfer window to sign the former West Ham United man. Plenty of Arsenal fans believe Rice is already living up to his price tag.

He has certainly established himself as a key figure at the Emirates Stadium very quickly. Is it now vital that he can remain fit and in form throughout the campaign, as Thomas Partey’s own injury concerns mean that he can’t be relied upon to be available when needed.
