The real reason why Myles Lewis-Skelly wasn’t called up by England U21s after Thomas Tuchel dropped him

Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly was dropped from the England national team, but he didn’t get called up by the U21s either.

The Hale End graduate has had a rollercoaster of a year. He broke into the Gunners’ first team last season and ended the campaign as their first-choice left-back.

This season, however, Lewis-Skelly has lost his place at Arsenal to Riccardo Calafiori, and there have been games in which Piero Hincapie has been preferred over him as well.

That is the reason why Thomas Tuchel left him out of his England side for the games against Serbia and Albania.

Why Myles Lewis-Skelly was not called up to the England U21s squad?

Myles Lewis-Skelly is still only 19 years old, so he is eligible to play for the England U21s.

After Tuchel dropped him from the senior international side because of his lack of game time at Arsenal, the obvious option would’ve been to send him to the junior team to get him minutes.

However, Lee Carsley, who claimed that he is monitoring Max Dowman, decided against calling Lewis-Skelly up to his U21s side.

The Athletic have now revealed why.

The report claims that before the England squad was announced, Tuchel personally called the teenager and explained his decision to drop him.

Furthermore, it was explained to Lewis-Skelly that he would not be sent to the U21s either because he is fully considered as a ‘senior international’ now.

The outlet has revealed that the conversation between Tuchel and the Arsenal number 49 was a ‘positive’ one even though the youngster was left out of the squad.

The two are said to share a ‘strong rapport and mutual respect’.

Thomas Tuchel is making a mistake by dropping Myles Lewis-Skelly

Game time has been hard to come by for Lewis-Skelly this season. He hasn’t started a single game in the Premier League yet.

Tuchel clearly has a reason to leave him out, but the 19-year-old is still England’s left-back.

The likes of Djed Spence, Tino Livramento, Nico O’Reilly, Luke Shaw and Dan Burn all have their strengths, but the Arsenal man is the most complete option available.

Leaving Lewis-Skelly out of his squad now is a big mistake, and we hope Tuchel realises it before he picks his final squad for the World Cup next year.
