Arsenal beat FC Porto to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, but they have a mixed record at this stage of the competition.
The Gunners are in their first Champions League campaign since 2017, and have been drawn against Bayern Munich, who have terrorised countless Arsene Wenger sides over the years.
Arsenal have not won the Champions League before, losing the only final they reached in 2006, but Mikel Arteta will hope he can make his mark in Europe with his side thriving at the top of the Premier League.
This will be Arsenal’s seventh appearance in the quarter-finals and have progressed beyond this stage just twice, but they may fancy their chances against a Bayern Munich side who are having their worst Bundesliga campaign in a decade.
Arsenal’s six Champions League quarter-final appearances

Arsenal’s first Champions League quarter-final appearance came in the 2000-01 season, but they were dumped out by La Liga side Valencia on away goals.
Wenger’s side won 2-1 at Highbury in the first leg, with Thierry Henry and Ray Parlour turning the game around after Roberto Ayala’s opener, but a 1-0 defeat at Mestalla courtesy of a late winner from John Carew meant they were eliminated.
Arsenal would then reach the stage again during the Invincibles season, and were in a good position after a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg. However, Chelsea pulled off a shock as Wayne Bridge scored an 87th-minute winner after Jose Antonio Reyes and Frank Lampard netted once each, in a goal which is still remembered as a gutting moment to this day.
The Gunners then faced Juventus in the 2006 quarter-finals after knocking Real Madrid out in the previous round, and a Cesc Fabregas masterclass helped Arsenal win 2-0 at Highbury, with Patrick Vieira starting for the visitors, before a 0-0 draw in Italy set up a semi-final with Villarreal.
Two years later, Arsenal faced Liverpool in the quarters, and goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Dirk Kuyt at the Emirates set up a dramatic second leg at Anfield.
Arsenal looked set to go through as a stunning Theo Walcott run helped set Adebayor up to make it 2-2 late on, but a controversial penalty from Steven Gerrard, and a late clincher from Ryan Babel, meant Liverpool progressed.
A year later, Arsenal faced Villarreal, and Adebayor scored an equaliser in Spain to cancel out Marcos Senna’s opener in the first leg, but a resounding 3-0 victory at the Emirates saw Walcott, Adebayor and Robin van Persie score to set up a semi-final with Manchester United.
Arsenal would have another crack at the quarter-finals a year later as they faced Barcelona, and they reversed a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 at the Emirates in the first leg, which saw Thierry Henry face his former club.
However, Lionel Messi would score four times in the second leg to send Barcelona through, and Arsenal would not reach this stage of the competition again, until now.
