Theo Walcott says Gabriel Martinelli made one Liverpool player look ‘incredible’ on Sunday

Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday as they lost 1-0 to Liverpool.

The Reds managed to get the better of Arsenal in a narrow win at the weekend courtesy of an incredible goal by Dominik Szoboszlai.

Szoboszlai scored a remarkable free-kick against the Gunners, but Szoboszlai also earned acclaim for his overall performance at right-back.

Speaking on It’s Called Soccer, Theo Walcott has been reviewing Sunday’s game and he made an interesting point about Szoboszlai’s performance.

According to the pundit, Szoboszlai was incredible on the day, but he says Szoboszlai was made to look incredible due to the fact Gabriel Martinelli really didn’t offer much.

Martinelli was criticised on Sunday, and Walcott says that he didn’t think he was very good either.

Walcott spoke about Szoboszlai and his showing against Arsenal.

The former Gunners winger says that the Hungarian was incredible on the day, but he says that was only because he wasn’t tested.

This was a midfield player at full-back, Martinelli should’ve been going at him non-stop, but, for some reason, the Brazilian gave Szoboszlai way too much respect.

“Szoboszlai was incredible, but the reason why he was incredible, he wasn’t tested at all. You’ve got a centre mid player at full back. For me, that’s music to my ears, it’s music to my ears,” Walcott said.

“But not at one point did Martinelli do his strengths. He over thought things, not once. The difference Madueke on that side, he was just playing with instinct, he played to his strength, he didn’t overthink things.”

Szoboszlai had a fantastic game against Arsenal, but, as Walcott says, Martinelli did give him an easy afternoon at right-back.

The Brazilian’s stats from the day show just how poor he was.

No shots, no key passes, no dribbles, this was an absolute nothing performance from Martinelli.

Sadly, these performances are becoming all too common for Martinelli, and after Eberechi Eze’s arrival at the Emirates, he may soon be dropped from the starting XI.
