England have had some superb midfielders over the years and the idea of pairing up Frank Lampard and Declan Rice is the stuff of dreams for some fans.
Rice and Lampard both came through at West Ham and would likely complement each other in the middle of the park.
However, tasked with picking just one of them in a combined England 2006 and 2026 XI, former Arsenal man Theo Walcott made his call.

Theo Walcott picks Frank Lampard over Declan Rice for England
Walcott was tasked with making some hard selection choices as he spoke to Amazon Prime doing an either/or section.
Of course, he soon got to picking between either Rice or Lampard and in the end, Walcott just gave the former England man the nod.
Frank Lampard or Declan Rice: Who are YOU picking if you could have just one for England?
Of course, picking Lampard over Rice is always going to be a tough decision but the former Chelsea man did have a brilliant record at international level.
Interestingly, Walcott also made a call on Bukayo Saka and David Beckham, while he also opted to go with Harry Kane over Michael Owen up front.
Former Arsenal man Ashley Cole was also given the nod by Walcott, albeit that selection was a touch easier given it was either Cole or Nico Reilly.
Declan Rice and Frank Lampard’s England record after 72 caps
It’s quite remarkable really that Rice has racked up 72 caps already and he is well on course to join the 100 club for England at some point.
Interestingly, when we compare Rice and Lampard, there isn’t actually much in it at this stage of their England careers.
Rice has scored six times while Lampard had amassed 14 goals by this point, while Lampard also just edges it in assists with 11 to Rice’s seven.

However, Rice has also made it to the 72 cap mark much quicker. At just 27, Rice is there three years before Lampard, who had to wait till he was 30 to reach the same milestone.
Of course, Lampard went on to make 106 appearances for England and quite impressively, added another 15 goals to his tally in those extra caps.
Still, Rice is ticking along nicely and come the end of his career, there’s a chance people will pick him over Lampard.
