Thierry Henry may not have kicked a ball in red and white in 14 years, but he’s still Arsenal through and through.
Arsenal’s record goalscorer is arguably the most adored player in the majority of Gooners’ eyes.
Now watching from afar, from time to time, Henry enjoys getting his teeth stuck into punditry, which he did on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football segment on matchday 22 of the Premier League season.
It was on Sky Sports that Henry shared his thoughts on Arsenal’s title chances, which is also when he took the opportunity to take a swipe at Tottenham.
Is Ian Wright the greatest Arsenal legend besides Thierry Henry? If not, who is?
Thierry Henry just made Tottenham look so small
Henry left North London with his head held high, not only because of his success at Arsenal, but because he never experienced losing a North London Derby.
The rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham means everything to the two clubs, who live four miles apart.
Arguably, it’s Spurs who hate Arsenal more, a hatred stemming from turf wars and ultimately, jealousy.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, host David Jones presented a graphic of who has finished higher per Premier League season: Arsenal or Tottenham.
Commenting on Tottenham’s decline, Jones said, “Spurs were finishing seasons above them [Arsenal] for six successive years.”
Henry’s response was brilliant, and one that all Arsenal fans will applaud: “I didn’t know that was an achievement.”
Finishing above Arsenal was a point worth making when analysing Spurs’ slip, and Henry’s comment only emphasised the difference in levels and expectation between the two North London clubs.
St Totteringham’s Day suggests Henry was also wrong
In response to Henry’s jab, Jones laughed and replied, “It’s not a trophy, but you’re well aware of the bragging rights.”
The Sky Sports presenter was right to say so, as Arsenal, too, fight for bragging rights.
Fill the blanks, it’ll be __ years until Tottenham next finish above Arsenal.
Arsenal have finished above Tottenham so many times that there’s a day to mark the occasion, St Totteringham’s Day, which marks when Spurs can no longer catch Arsenal in the League.
It’s been celebrated 25 times, with Arsenal finishing above Tottenham 75% of the time since the Premier League was founded in 1992.
- Seasons: 33
- Arsenal above Tottenham: 25
- Tottenham above Arsenal: 8
The difference in levels is what Henry wanted to emphasise, and he did just that.
