Thierry Henry believes that David Raya is competing with Declan Rice for Arsenal’s Player of the Season award following another top performance versus Atletico Madrid.
Raya has been superb for Arsenal this season, and perhaps at times his importance to the team has gone under the radar.
TRUE or FALSE: David Raya is the best goalkeeper in the world…
Being a goalkeeper can be tough in terms of getting the credit, but Henry has been singing the Spaniard’s praises after beating Atletico.
The Arsenal legend has suggested that the 28-year-old is a contender, along with Declan Rice, for the best performer of the season.
Thierry Henry hails David Raya’s performances for Arsenal
Thierry Henry has been so impressed by David Raya’s performances for Arsenal this season and claims he is a contender for the team’s best player.
Arsenal played without Raya in the Carabao Cup final, and his importance was highlighted significantly when Kepa Arrizabalaga started instead.
Henry claims that goalkeepers can’t quite be considered match winners like outfield players, but the Arsenal legend has been keen to ensure he receives his flowers.
“I think there is a battle with Declan Rice. We’re going to have to be honest, but what you did every single game this season is outstanding,” Henry told CBS Sports.
Who was your Man of the Match vs Atletico Madrid?
“I know you can put we cannot put points on the goalkeeper sometimes when winning a game. You can only make sure that our team cannot lose the game.
“So you’ve been outstanding, and I think it’s not easy to be in a discussion of player of the year, being a goalkeeper. So I think you should be in that discussion. So well done.”
Raya’s ability to act as an 11th outfield player and keep Arsenal ticking over is another factor which makes him so impressive.
Right now, it’s tough to find another goalkeeper who is quite as complete as Raya, and he is quite possibly the best in Europe.
