Wayne Rooney believes Mikel Arteta is now facing the dilemma of having to choose whether to start Eberechi Eze or Martin Odegaard for Arsenal.

Eze scored a sensational hat-trick against Tottenham on Sunday, and his performance has now left Mikel Arteta with a much-welcome selection headache.

Who starts in the number 10 role for Arsenal when both fit?

For the first time since moving to the Emirates Stadium, Odegaard is no longer a guaranteed starter for Arsenal, with the Gunners’ new signing exploding into life.

Now, Rooney has been having his say on the debate as to which player should be starting in the number ten role for the North London side.

Wayne Rooney has his say on Eberechi Eze versus Martin Odegaard at Arsenal

Wayne Rooney reckons Martin Odegaard is going to face a real battle to win back his spot following Eberechi Eze’s three goals against Spurs.

The former Manchester United striker thinks that Mikel Arteta might find it tough giving his captain regular minutes when he returns from injury.

Rooney has questioned Odegaard’s form even before his injury and fears that the Norwegian could struggle to win his place back.

Do you agree with Wayne Rooney on Eberechi Eze versus Martin Odegaard?

“Yeah, he’s captain. I think that will be a bit of an issue for Arteta because I think he looks settled in the team, and he wasn’t in the greatest form before he got injured. And now he’s picked up a lot of injuries,” said the Premier League legend.

“So I think it will be tough for him to get back in. You always get a bit of leeway being captain as well, but I think he’s going to have to fight for his place now.”

Odegaard is slowly recovering from an injury and could return to action very soon for the Gunners.

Regardless of who should start between the two attacking midfielders, having both fit and available will be so important for Arteta, given the Gunners’ hectic schedule.

Wayne Rooney hails Leandro Trossard’s ‘brilliant performance vs Tottenham

Another Arsenal player who really impressed Rooney was Leandro Trossard, with the ex-England international calling his display ‘brilliant’ against Tottenham.

No Arsenal player has more direct goal contributions this season than the Belgian, who currently has ten in total for the Gunners.

Is Leandro Trossard Arsenal’s most underrated player?

Rooney said: “Eze is coming to the team now, obviously, he gets his hat trick, which is amazing for him, but he’s looking like he’s fitting in more and more with every game.

“Trossard, I thought, was brilliant. They look together, they look, they’re the team to beat. I think it’s going to take some stopping to beat them.”
