Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale signed a new contract with the club in May despite knowing that the club were interested in David Raya.

That’s according to a report in the Mirror which suggests that Raya does look favourite to take over the goalkeeper position this year.

The report does however confirm that Ramsdale will keep his place in the short term and start against Crystal Palace on Monday.

Why Pele Is Overrated.

Although it’s not too surprising that Ramsdale still chose to sign a new contract, it would be a shock to see him replaced.

On the whole Ramsdale had an excellent season for Arsenal – a campaign in which they pushed for the league title.

Ramsdale improved a lot during the season and looks to have become a real leader in the dressing room.

A lot of Arsenal fans were initially concerned when links surfaced about the club’s interest in Raya.

There has been very little clamour for their number one to be replaced, but this new competition is the reality of Arteta’s plans.

Ramsdale signed a new contract with Arsenal despite knowing Raya interest

Of course, Ramsdale may react positively to the arrival of Raya.

The best case scenario for Arsenal is that both players are pushing each other because they are both at the top of their game.

And if that is the case then Ramsdale should be in a good position to also be England’s number one, something that must be on his mind.

Ramsdale signing a new contract at Arsenal knowing they wanted Raya wasn’t a lack of ambition – it was quite the opposite.

Ramsdale is clearly backing himself to prosper in the challenge.

The goalkeeper does come across as a confident character and if he continues to play well then he shouldn’t be dropped.

At 25-years-old Ramsdale has a huge future ahead of him, and there’s absolutely no reason to think that won’t be with Arsenal.
