Riccardo Calafiori has been told to return to Arsenal by the Italian national football team.
The versatile defender was called up by Gennaro Gattuso for the Azzurri’s World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway.
Calafiori missed the first game due to a hip injury. He was expected to be available for the clash against Norway on Sunday, but that hasn’t gone to plan either now.
The 23-year-old is on his way back to London.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Arsenal star Riccardo Calafiori’s injury
Riccardo Calafiori has had an incredible start to the season at Arsenal.
After an injury-hit 2024/25 campaign, the Italy international worked really hard on his fitness in the summer and has started every game in the Premier League this term.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed now that Calafiori has been sent back to London for Arsenal’s doctors to assess him further.
Italy boss Gattuso has also confirmed his departure.
That is a cause for concern for Arsenal fans ahead of massive games against Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Chelsea coming up right after the international break.
Thankfully, Romano has confirmed that the Gunners’ medical staff don’t think it is anything serious.
The journalist’s tweet read: “Riccardo Calafiori has left the Italy camp today and returns to London to be assessed by Arsenal staff.
“He tried to be available, but he can’t force now”, says Italy coach Gattuso.
“AFC staff informed + not anticipating a big problem or issue.”
Arsenal have no reason to fear Riccardo Calafiori’s injury
It is great news that Arsenal’s doctors aren’t expecting anything serious for Calafiori, who has a poor injury record.
The aim will be to get him ready for the North London Derby against Tottenham next weekend, but even if he doesn’t make it, Arsenal will be fine.
That’s because Mikel Arteta has Myles Lewis-Skelly and Piero Hincapie waiting in the wings to step in if their manager needs them.
Both players are more than good enough to fill in for Calafiori, and we are convinced that they can both handle Mohammed Kudus without any trouble.
