Arsenal have now announced the signing of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, after weeks of talks dragged on to delay the deal.

Merino has been a long-term target for Arsenal, and Mikel Arteta convinced him to move to the Emirates instead of Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

Arsenal have now confirmed Merino’s arrival, which puts an end to a six-year spell at Real Sociedad, in which he won the Copa Del Rey and played in the Champions League knockouts.

The 28-year-old arrives with a lot of experience, and Merino has already shown he has the leadership qualities to support Arsenal’s younger players.

The midfielder has now joined the rest of the Arsenal squad, and he has already told them what he plans to achieve this season.

Mikel Merino’s first words to the Arsenal squad

Speaking in a squad meeting as his signing was announced, Merino expressed his delight that his move has finally been completed.

“Thank you all for the warm welcome,” Merino stated.

“I’m very happy to be here with all of you. I’m just excited for this season.

“Hopefully we can keep doing big things as you guys are doing. Thank you.”

Merino has taken the number 23 shirt, previously worn by players including Sol Campbell and Andrei Arshavin at Arsenal, and after weeks of waiting, he is now a Gunner.

Mikel Merino joins Arsenal squad for training

Merino has seemingly already trained with the Arsenal squad, and he is eligible to be in the squad for Arsenal’s next game against Brighton.

Arsenal’s midfield shape was questionable against Aston Villa, with Declan Rice struggling in a number eight role, and Merino seems a perfect fit to slot in.

However, it would be a surprise if Merino is included in the starting XI immediately, but he could come off the bench to make his debut at the Emirates before the International break.
