Arsenal secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals after beating FC Porto on penalties at the Emirates.

In what was a heated affair, Arsenal won 1-0 on the night to equal the score after losing the first leg, with Leandro Trossard scoring in the first half.

Both managers picked up bookings during the game, with Sergio Conceicao accusing Mikel Arteta of insulting his family, which Arsenal have now denied.

Referee Clement Turpin was the subject of a lot of frustration from the Emirates crowd, and all of this, combined with Porto’s time-wasting antics and Arsenal’s somewhat blunt attacking performance, led to fiery exchanges on the touchline.

Arsenal went on to win on penalties, sparking scenes of wild jubilation, but there was still bad blood between the two coaches at full-time.

What happened at the Emirates between Mikel Arteta and Sergio Conceicao?

Footage has now emerged of Arteta and Conceicao exchanging heated words, before the Porto manager walked away and refused to shake the Spaniard’s hand.

The build-up to the game saw Conceicao fire shots at Arteta after the first leg, insulting Arsenal’s approach in Porto, and even after defeat, he did not hold back.

“Let him worry about training his team, which has more than enough quality to play a lot better,” he stated after his side were beaten at the Emirates.

Arteta clearly looked unhappy with his behaviour after he refused to shake his hand at the end, but he can be happy knowing that his side have progressed to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.

When the draw was announced, there was little bad blood between the two sides. They have faced each other on several occasions, with Arsenal’s last appearance in the quarter-finals coming after they knocked Porto out of the competition with a 5-0 victory at the Emirates.

However, these two games saw the Porto players and Arsenal players clash over time-wasting and fouling, and the two managers clash before, during and after the games.

Arsenal’s jubilant celebrations at the end were partly relief and joy that they had navigated past the Portuguese giants, but there may have also been an extra sense of satisfaction that after everything Porto threw at them, that they came out victorious.
