Piero Hincapie did not have a game to remember as the Arsenal defender was sent off during Ecuador’s World Cup exit at the hands of Mexico.
Ecuador crashed out of the tournament at the hands of Mexico, as they were beaten 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium.
Who is Arsenal’s best left-back: RICCARDO CALAFIORI or PIERO HINCAPIE?
It has been a pretty underwhelming World Cup campaign for a South American team which looked quite strong heading into the tournament.
Following the defeat, the local media in Ecuador were not best pleased with the team’s performance and especially that of the Arsenal defender.
Ecuadorian media slam Piero Hincapie’s performance vs Mexico
The Ecuadorian media have slammed the performance of Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie as he was shown a red card.
The 23-year-old was sent off in stoppage time for covering his mouth following a heated exchange with Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez.
Hincapie has been pretty poor at the World Cup, and his latest display for Ecuador was also very underwhelming.
The Arsenal star was moved from left-back to centre-back during the game, and he really seemed to struggle in the more central role.
Hincapie won just six of his 13 duels, was dribbled past once, although he did make six clearances and four recoveries.
After the game, the local media were clearly not best pleased with the Arsenal defender and rated his performance very low.
- ESPN Colombia rated him 3/10: “He was often outplayed on the left flank and was left out of position, as Mexico focused their attacks down his area. He was sent off near the end of the match for covering his mouth.”
- Primicias also gave him 3/10: “He tried to contribute with attacking play and a lot of attitude, but on the wing, he generated less security than when managing down the Simon Bolivar flank.
“When he moved to centre back in the second half, he lost a couple of aerial duels with Montes. He was sent off for covering his mouth as the match was ending.”
Hincapie should now be available for the majority of pre-season with the Gunners, who made his move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent for £34.5 million.
