William Saliba proves major critic wrong as he joins Arsenal target in Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament

Arsenal defender William Saliba and one Mikel Arteta transfer target have been included in the official Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament.

William Saliba was a stalwart at the back for France throughout their Euro 2024 campaign.

The Arsenal star produced a string of impressive performances in Germany, improving as the competition wore on. This is particularly impressive considering Saliba had not been expected to play a key role for his country.

France manager Didier Deschamps had been critical of Saliba in the past, and seemingly reluctant to make use of the 23-year-old.

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal fans will have found this stance hard to comprehend, as Saliba has been almost faultless for the Gunners since coming into the first team picture at the Emirates Stadium two seasons ago.

Saliba has proven himself to be a world-class player at Arsenal, and will be a major figure in the heart of Arteta’s rearguard again throughout the upcoming campaign.

It will surprise no one in North London that, having finally been given his chance to shine on the international sage, Saliba was able to do just that.

His performances at Euro 2024 were even recognised by Uefa, who have now included the Arsenal man in their official Team of the Tournament, along with the likes of Manchester City trio Kyle Walker, Manuel Akanji, and Rodri, and Arteta target Nico Williams.

Arsenal have been credited with an interest in Williams, who lit up the summer competition. He was especially impressive in Sunday evening’s final, as Spain dashed England’s hopes of ending a 58 year wait for silverware in Berlin.

The Athletic Bilbao winger terrorised the England defence all evening, as his pace, flair, and directness all caused problems for Gareth Southgate’s side. Williams’ relentless positivity and desire to attack paid off just after the break as he struck the goal which put Spain ahead.

Why Arsenal want to sign Nico Williams

As Williams can operate comfortably on either flank, he would offer cover and competition for both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli at the Emirates Stadium, and he has the capacity to be a star player under Arteta.

Beyond Martinelli, it would be fair to say that the Gunners lack blistering pace in their attacking contingent. The 22-year-old would certainly address this issue. As well as having an eye for goal himself, he can also be a creative force. He was a constant supplier of crosses throughout Euro 2024.

However, Arsenal have been warned against signing Williams this summer, due to the problems that his wage demands could cause in the Emirates Stadium dressing room.
