Arsenal’s Premier League triumph was built on far more than just talent.

Mikel Arteta assembled one of the strongest squads in Europe, but winning a title requires a mentality that goes beyond technical ability.

The Gunners developed a resilience and edge that allowed them to navigate difficult moments throughout the campaign, particularly at the back.

According to William Saliba, one man deserves huge credit for helping create that mentality: Gabriel Heinze.

William Saliba reveals how Gabriel Heinze shocked Arsenal on his first day

Heinze arrived at Arsenal with an impressive reputation.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender was known throughout his playing career for his intensity, aggression and relentless desire to win.

It appears he brought exactly the same attitude with him to north London.

Speaking about Heinze’s arrival as a member of the coaching staff, Saliba admitted the Argentine immediately caught everybody’s attention – not because of his tactical ideas or coaching drills, but because of the way he approached the group from day one.

Saliba told France Football: “When Gabriel Heinze joined us, he started yelling at everyone, even the big players. Everyone was shocked!

“But, on arrival, he gave us real grit. And it’s a question of survival, ultimately.

“Every weekend, you have an opponent in front of you, any team has an international striker. The guys are aggressive, run everywhere, jump in every duel, dribble, and shoot.

“You relax for two seconds, even against a bottom-placed team, and you get punished.

“Because any match you think you control can descend into chaos in a matter of minutes. The crowd ignites, the opposing team catches fire, and without having had time to understand, you already find yourself in great difficulty.

“Frankly, I love this completely crazy league, even if our coach really wants to control every match.”

Arsenal planning to extend Gabriel Heinze’s contract is the right thing to do

When a coaching appointment works, clubs should do everything possible to keep that person around. That certainly feels like the case with Heinze.

The impact the Argentine has had on Arsenal’s defenders is obvious. Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes were already excellent players, but together they formed the foundation of a title-winning side and one of the best defensive units in Europe.

Just as importantly, Heinze appears to have influenced the mentality of the entire squad. His demanding nature may have shocked players initially, but it clearly helped raise standards inside the dressing room.

That is exactly the type of personality elite teams need behind the scenes.

Arsenal are reportedly planning to extend Heinze’s contract, and it feels like a straightforward decision. The Gunners have built something special over the last few years, and keeping key figures such as Heinze at the club will only increase their chances of staying at the top.
