Aaron Ramsdale made his first Premier League start since September as Arsenal beat Brentford with a last-minute winner from Kai Havertz.

Havertz nodded in from an excellent Bukayo Saka cross which saw Arsenal leave Brentford with a 1-0 victory, which sent Mikel Arteta’s side to the top of the Premier League.

Ramsdale was starting in place of David Raya, who was ineligible to face his parent club, but whilst he kept a clean sheet, he made a number of errors on the ball, much to Mikel Arteta’s frustration.

Nevertheless, the Arsenal players all congratulated Ramsdale at full-time, and he was serenaded by the away fans in attendance.

Taking to his Instagram account after the game, Ramsdale praised the Arsenal faithful, who left the ground in a jubilant mood following the dramatic victory.

“A feeling I never take for granted,” he posted.

“Love being part of this club. Fans were next level last night looking out for me. Thank you.”

Arsenal players past and present expressed their love for Ramsdale in the comments section. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber all commented with love emojis, whilst Jack Wilshere also offered his support to the goalkeeper.

Ramsdale has had to endure a tough situation following Raya’s arrival, with the England international dropping to the bench, and with both keepers making errors since, Arteta has been criticised for his decision to bring Raya in.

Confidence boost for Ramsdale?

Although he had a few moments of struggle, Ramsdale keeping a clean sheet in a tough game will hopefully give him a confidence boost.

He is a popular figure within the Arsenal squad, and his teammates were all clearly delighted that he managed to win upon his return.

It is unclear whether he will be given the chance to keep his place for Arsenal’s Champions League tie against RC Lens this week, with Arteta’s side all but qualified for the last-16, but it is clear now that Raya is the first choice ahead of the England star.

Ramsdale was outstanding at times last season but did make occasional errors, and he nearly conceded in the first half after giving the ball away with a poor pass.

Keeping a clean sheet in such a tough game for Arsenal was no easy feat, and Ramsdale will hope that if he is allowed the chance to build up some momentum, he will be back to his best.
