It is fair to say that Andrea Berta has impressed Arsenal fans during his first transfer window at the club.
After officially being unveiled as the club’s new sporting director at the end of last season, Berta had a pivotal first transfer window on his hands.
The Italian sprung into action by securing the long-term futures of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, as well as Gabriel Magalhaes.
Eight new signings also came through the door including the important additions of Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze, however one £23m transfer showed there is still room for improvement.

Arsenal show flaws in allowing £23m Jakub Kiwior transfer to Porto
Despite spending over £250m on those eight signings, Arsenal had plenty of ‘wiggle room’ on PSR guidelines.
However, the club obviously wanted to balance the books with a number of player sales. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Reiss Nelson secured loan moves to Premier League sides on deadline day.
Fabio Vieira and Albert Sambi Lokonga moved to Hamburg in Germany but there was one sale that caught the eye in showing Arsenal’s biggest flaw in the transfer market.
Jakub Kiwior signed for Porto on season-long loan with an option to buy for £23m at the end of the year with the Gunners bringing in Piero Hincapie as a replacement.
Kiwior could have been persuaded to stay at the club but after his exceptional performances at the end of last season, the defender wanted regular first-team football.
Player sales have been an area of weakness for the club for a number of seasons and they might just feel that yet again they have let a top player go for under his true market value.
£35m Jarell Quansah transfer fee should have been Arsenal’s benchmark for Jakub Kiwior
It is a source of frustration for Arsenal fans that the club do not seem to recoup money from the assets as well as other clubs.
Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah was signed by Bayer Leverkusen this summer in a deal that will eventually rise to £35m.
| Key statistics from last season | Kiwior | Quansah |
| Appearances | 17 | 13 |
| Progressive passes | 3.84 | 3.45 |
| Passing accuracy | 91.4% | 90.8% |
| Tackle success rate | 73.3% | 70% |
| Aerial duels won | 45.8% | 41.2% |
Both Quansah and Kiwior were understudies for their respective title-chasing clubs and in fact, Kiwior actually had the better statistics last season.
However, once again Arsenal left themselves short-changed when it came to parting ways with Kiwior and Berta must seek to rectify this flaw in future windows.
