Arsenal fans will be furious after hearing what the Premier League have announced ahead of Newcastle clash

Arsenal visit Newcastle United in the Premier League at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners strolled past Port Vale in midweek, resting several key players who should be fit and raring to go on Tyneside.

Meanwhile, the Magpies also enjoyed a relatively stress-free evening on Wednesday, cruising past Bradford and into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

While Arteta will be preparing his players for the crucial clash in the north-west, Arsenal fans will no doubt be worked up over something the Premier League have just announced.

Premier League appoint Darren England as VAR for Newcastle vs Arsenal

Arsenal have been hard done by refereeing decisions in the last 12 months.

The Gunners had six players sent off in the Premier League last season, with some of these dismissals certainly contentious.

Myles Lewis-Skelly even had a red card overturned, as a review deemed the decision to send the youngster off egregious in the aftermath of Arsenal’s game against Wolves in January.

Thus far this season, the North Londoners haven’t been at the forefront of a controversial officiating moment, although their games away at Newcastle have notoriously prompted refereeing discourse.

Jarred Gillet has been confirmed as the referee for the encounter with the Magpies, and he’ll be supported by Ian Hussin and Scott Ledger.

The Premier League have also appointed Darren England as the Video Assistant Referee for the match, much to the dismay of Arsenal fans.

Darren England produced controversial refereeing display in Everton vs Arsenal last season

Many may not be familiar with England and his history with the Gunners, but they won’t be pleased when reminded.

England oversaw Arsenal’s game against Everton in April at Goodison Park, and produced a bizarre display, to say the least.

In the 15th minute on Merseyside, England brandished a yellow card for Jake O’Brien, after a VAR review.

The official initially waved away O’Brien’s reckless tackle on Ben White, before giving the card following a VAR check for potential violent conduct. Yellow cards are explicitly not supposed to be handed out based on VAR reviews.

England later awarded Everton a soft penalty for a perceived foul by Lewis-Skelly on Jack Harrison, in what appeared to be a 50/50 tussle, which mostly occurred outside of the box.

Finally, the referee showed his indecision by blowing the whistle too early and then restarting the game after pressure from the Everton players.

The Toffees’ players shouted at England, pointing to the big screen inside the stadium to show that time wasn’t up, and the official quite literally reversed his full-time whistle.
