Atletico Madrid just couldn’t cope with one Arsenal star, the numbers prove it

One Arsenal player caused Atletico Madrid more problems than anyone else during the Gunners’ 4-0 win.

Arsenal remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season, extending their impressive run of form in all competitions with a resounding win over Atletico.

Though Atletico weren’t happy with referee Davide Massa, there could be no complaints over who the worthy winner of the contest was.

Mikel Arteta’s side tore the visitors apart, with goals from Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and a Viktor Gyokeres brace making the difference.

Gyokeres ended his scoring drought with two goals against the Spanish giants, and it’s fair to say Atletico won’t want to come up against the Swede again any time soon.

Atletico Madrid couldn’t stop fouling Viktor Gyokeres

Atletico wanted to sign Gyokeres when Andrea Berta was their sporting director, so the striker’s double might’ve hurt even more than usual.

The 27-year-old pulled off one of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt, and Atletico found it incredibly hard to handle him.

The numbers only reinforce such, as no player on the pitch was fouled more times than Gyokeres, as per FotMob

Atletico fouled the Arsenal star as many as four times during his 83 minutes in the contest, showing just how much caution the visitors approached the marksman with.

Atletico’s efforts amounted to nothing, as Gyokeres scored his first two Champions League goals for Arsenal, in what was a Man of the Match display from the summer signing.

Mikel Arteta loves how unpredictable Gyokeres has made Arsenal

Gyokeres won over Arsenal fans with his performance against Atletico before he even scored the two goals.

The Sweden international’s work rate was impossible to overlook, which explained why Atletico resorted to fouling him so frequently.

After the game, Arteta didn’t hold back when singing the striker’s praises, applauding the new dimension the forward has given his attack.

“He makes us a much better team. I think we’ve become much more unpredictable,” Arteta said.

“He’s so physical, he opens the spaces for everybody, the way he presses the ball, holds the ball, he’s just phenomenal.”

The Arsenal manager went on to describe Gyokeres’ goals as merely the ‘icing on the cake’, clearly impressed with the impact the summer signing is already having.

Gyokeres’ scoring drought is over, with all eyes on what the 27-year-old can produce in future games.
