Arsenal made their grand return to action on Wednesday against AC Milan in their first friendly of pre-season.

The Gunners won 1-0 on the day in what was largely an uneventful fixture.

Ethan Nwaneri impressed, while Max Dowman looked bright, but, other than that, it wasn’t the most thrilling of matches.

After the game had concluded, Arsenal and Milan played out a penalty shootout, and while Arsenal lost on penalties, one player can be very proud of their showing here.

Indeed, Kepa Arrizabalaga saved three penalties from AC Milan, and, in doing so, he may have left Chelsea fans very frustrated.

Chelsea fans may be fed up after Kepa Arrizabalaga’s penalty heroics

Kepa saved three penalties on his Arsenal debut in a shootout, and it’s impossible to not see some semblance of irony in this situation.

Indeed, Kepa’s most famous moments at Chelsea were botched penalty shootout efforts.

Back in 2019, Kepa refused to be substituted in the Carabao Cup final ahead of the penalty shootout, only to eventually lose the shootout, saving just one of the five spot kicks he faced.

That was Kepa’s most infamous moment at Chelsea, but just three years later at the same stage, the Spaniard made headlines again with his penalty antics.

Kepa failed to save any of the 11 penalties he faced against Liverpool back in the 2022 Carabao Cup final, while he embarrassed himself with his mind games vs Virgil van Dijk.

To make matters even worse, Kepa missed the decisive penalty at the end of the shootout.

This is a player who cost Chelsea in two high-profile penalty shootouts, and now, in his very first game for Arsenal, he’s shone in the same sort of situation.

Kepa’s penalty record

Kepa may have fallen short for Chelsea in two high-profile shootouts in the past, saving just one of 16 penalties faced in those two games, but, overall, his penalty record is solid.

Indeed, based purely on open-play penalties, Kepa has a good record of saving spot kicks.

Kepa is a ‘fantastic’ goalkeeper, via The Mirror, and his record here shows it.

A save percentage of almost 25% is very respectable and is higher than the average, which is around 22%.

Kepa has let Chelsea down in shootouts in the past, but, early indications suggest that he could well end up being a penalty hero for Arsenal at some point down the line.
