Wayne Rooney has just made a very surprising claim about Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Sweden international joined the Gunners from Sporting CP after a long saga in the summer, and he has had a decent start to life in the famous red and white.
Before getting injured, Gyokeres scored six goals in his first 14 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side, which is not a bad return at all considering that this is his first season in the Premier League.
The Arsenal striker definitely deserves praise, but Rooney has gone one step further.

Wayne Rooney says Viktor Gyokeres has been one of the top three players in the Premier League in 2025/26
Arsenal had needed a new striker for more than three years before this summer, and Andrea Berta brought in Viktor Gyokeres.
The debate in the summer was between the Swede and Benjamin Sesko, and it looked for a long time like the latter was the preferred option.
However, it was Gyokeres who became the chosen one in the end, and he has worked tirelessly for the Gunners every time he has played.
Rooney, who recently claimed that Gyokeres has been a better signing than Sesko, has once again shown his appreciation for the Arsenal man.
When asked to name the top three players in the Premier League this season, the Manchester United legend picked Antoine Semenyo, Bryan Mbeumo and Gyokeres.
He told Prime Video Sport about the Sweden international: “I’ll probably go Gyokeres, I think.
“Arsenal have been crying out for a number nine for a few years now. He has come in with his work rate, his determination and his hold-up play, and obviously scoring a few goals as well.”

Has Viktor Gyokeres been a good signing for Arsenal?
Wayne Rooney is totally wrong, but Arsenal fans should be excited
We love Gyokeres, but he hasn’t been one of the top three players in the Premier League this season.
In fact, the 27-year-old isn’t even among the top three Arsenal players this term – Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice and David Raya have all been better than him.
When you look across the division, Erling Haaland has been the best in the country this season. He has scored 22 times in all competitions so far – over thrice as many as the Gunners striker.
| Games | Goals | Assists | |
| Viktor Gyokeres in 2025/26 | 14 | 6 | 0 |
| Erling Haaland in 2025/26 | 19 | 22 | 2 |
We’re sure even Gyokeres would be surprised that Rooney has rated him higher than Haaland; it’s just not true.
However, the fact that one of the greatest strikers of all time is such a big fan of Gyokeres should excite Arsenal supporters about the future.
He has done well so far, and we’re convinced he will be even better once he returns from his injury.
