Gabriel Martinelli has not been the same since ‘quality’ Arsenal star left, Mikel Arteta must find a solution

Gabriel Martinelli is a player under intense scrutiny at Arsenal.

The Brazilian was a breath of fresh air when he burst into the team under Unai Emery and quickly became a favourite under Mikel Arteta.

Martinelli was fantastic on the left flank during the 2022-23 campaign, contributing 15 goals and six assists as Arsenal came ever so close to winning the Premier League ahead of Manchester City.

However, the winger has struggled for form since that campaign and Arsenal fans are becoming frustrated with Martinelli. His dip in form coincides with one important departure from the club.

Gabriel Martinelli has not been the same player since Granit Xhaka left Arsenal

Gary Lineker criticised Martinelli for his performance against Liverpool and it is notable that the Brazilian has lost his spark going forward.

At the peak of his powers, the Emirates Stadium would rise in excitement every time Martinelli received the ball and attacked his full back.

The 23-year-old now seems to be intent on playing safe and often looks indecisive in his final actions, causing him to lose the ball or rush his shot or pass.

Many would point to the departure of Granit Xhaka as a key reason behind Martinelli’s dip in form as the former Gunners midfielder would open up space for his teammate.

Jamie Redknapp thinks Xhaka is ‘quality’ and Arsenal have certainly lacked some creativity and fluidity in their attack since he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2023.

How can Mikel Arteta fix his Gabriel Martinelli problem?

The reason why Martinelli thrived with Xhaka in the side was the movement from deep that Xhaka provided that drew the right back inside and then opened up space for the Brazilian.

Xhaka was also a natural left footed player in the number eight position and was able to set Martinelli away early with his range of passing.

Eberechi Eze could be the man that helps to unlock Martinelli once again if he is given a chance in that left channel.

The England winger will occupy defenders with his ball carrying ability, and his range of passing and vision will also be a huge benefit to Martinelli and Arsenal.
