Ian Wright confidently predicted back in 2018 that Mikel Arteta was the perfect manager to take over from Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
Eight years on, and Arteta is now just three games away from making history at the Emirates Stadium with the Premier League and Champions League titles in his sights.
👀 TRUE or FALSE: Mikel Arteta will become Arsenal’s greatest ever coach if he wins the PL and UCL titles…
The Gunners have their best shot at winning the ultimate double with Burnley, Crystal Palace and Paris Saint-Germain standing in their way.
Ahead of arguably the most important fortnight in the club’s history, Arsenal fans have dug up Wright’s quotes speaking about why Arteta was the man to become the Gunners’ new manager.
Ian Wright wanted Mikel Arteta to replace Arsene Wenger
Ian Wright chose Mikel Arteta as the manager he wanted to replace Arsene Wenger after the Frenchman departed Arsenal back in May 2018.
The Gunners instead opted to appoint Unai Emery, who ended up having a real mixed tenure in North London.
18 months later, Wright eventually got his wish, as Arteta was named Arsenal manager, replacing Emery in December 2019.
Speaking about the contenders for the Arsenal job back in 2018, Wright told BBC MOTD: “I quite like the feel of Mikel Arteta if he was, you know.
“You’ve got to take a chance on people. The club took a chance on Wenger. I think that he’s somebody who knows the club.
🙏 Which Arsenal player would you most like to see score the winning goal in the UCL final?
“He’s been under Pep for a couple of years, seeing what he’s been doing. I think those players need a little bit of a kick up the backside, and I think he might be the man to do it.”
Wright perfectly summarised why Arsenal should have gone for Arteta when replacing Wenger, and the Spaniard has proven him exactly right.
During his six years in N5, many supporters have doubted Arteta’s ability, but if he can win his next three matches, he will go down as the greatest coach in the club’s history.
