It’s very clear what Gabriel Magalhaes needs to do at Arsenal after official announcement

Gabriel Magalhaes has just been named in Brazil’s squad for the March international break, but he should decline the invitation.

Every game that remains in the 2025/26 season is like a cup final for Arsenal, who, at the time of writing, are still capable of winning the quadruple.

The primary focus is on finally winning the Premier League, which would end a 22-year wait for the title to be delivered to N5.

It’s why Mikel Arteta needs his entire squad fit, firing and focused on the seven remaining league games, and it’s simultaneously why the March international break should be feared.

Thomas Tuchel will announce his England squad on Friday, but Brazil have just announced theirs, with Carlo Ancelotti calling both Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli up.

Gabriel Magalhaes needs to withdraw from international duty after Brazil call up

Gabriel’s call-up to the Brazil squad was always going to happen, as the Arsenal man is arguably the best defender in the world right now.

It’s an honour for the centre-back, but it’s a desirable invitation that he must turn down.

The last time Gabriel was on international duty, he sustained an adductor injury that kept him out of action for six Premier League games, with Arsenal dropping points in two of them.

Arsenal fans were furious at the time, as the game was non-competitive, being a friendly against Senegal.

The March international break poses a similar risk, as Brazil play two friendly games, the astounding difference being that Arsenal need Gabriel now more than ever.

With the title race nearing the home straight, no risks can be taken for a player as integral to Arteta’s squad as Gabriel.

For his goal threat, his mentality, his leadership and his superior defensive strength, Arsenal need Gabriel to be at full fitness, and the international break threatens that.

The friendlies come against Croatia and France, two top-level national teams that, despite not being competitive, will be competitive in nature as players fight for World Cup spots.

That doesn’t concern Gabriel; he’s a nailed-on starter for Brazil at the World Cup, so his participation in the March friendlies ultimately counts for nothing but additional caps.

The idea of an injury to Gabriel whilst on duty would be a nightmare, but fortunately, it’s avoidable.

Granted, it’s easier said than done, but it’s time for the 28-year-old to withdraw himself from the March action and remain fully focused on his domestic duties back in North London.
