Jack Wilshere was once Arsenal’s most exciting midfield talent.
The Englishman got the better of Barcelona’s iconic midfield when he was a teenager, and if it weren’t for injuries, he would’ve gone on to become an absolute superstar.
Wilshere is a manager now, and he knows a good midfielder when he sees one. The Arsenal hero has been blown away by Declan Rice.

Jack Wilshere is spot on with his assessment of Arsenal star Declan Rice
Rice has arguably been Arsenal’s most important player since he joined the club in 2023.
The Gunners agreed a mammoth £105 million deal with West Ham for his signature, and the fact that nobody has really spoken about his price tag since his debut shows how good he has been.
Jack Wilshere knows Rice very well, having played with him at West Ham United, and he seems to have been amazed by the midfielder’s performances.
“You know, I love Dec, I made it clear, and everyone knows my relationship with Dec,” Wilshere told The Mirror.
“But take that away, and I think he’s outstanding. I really do. What is Dec? Is he a six, an eight or a 10? He can do everything. We need to create midfielders who can do that.”
Wilshere is spot on with his assessment. Rice showed his class as a number six at West Ham and in his early days at Arsenal, and his transformation into a box-to-box role since has made him one of the best in the world.
Furthermore, Rice has broken his personal best goal tally in each of his two seasons at the Emirates, thus showing he can produce the output that a number 10 does.
As Wilshere said, Rice can do anything, and Arsenal are lucky to have him.
Is Declan Rice Arsenal’s most important player?
Declan Rice has become even better this season because of one player
Rice admitted recently that his role at Arsenal has changed and that is thanks to one player – Martin Zubimendi.
The Spaniard joined the club from Real Sociedad in the summer and has settled in really well. He has been brilliant in the middle of the park, and his presence there has allowed more freedom for Rice.
The former West Ham man, as a result, can go up and down the pitch as he wishes, and that has brought the best out of him in recent weeks.
Together, Rice and Zubimendi have formed what is arguably the best midfield partnership in the Premier League, and if they play at their best all season, Arsenal will likely end the campaign with silverware.
