Arsenal had to be patient to get the best out of Kai Havertz, who came alive after a slow start to life in North London.
In the summer of 2023, Arsenal welcomed Havertz from Chelsea, and even then, it was unclear where the German would play.
Mikel Arteta has always been an advocate for Havertz, consistently lauding the 25-year-old’s versatility, as seen throughout the past two seasons.
The Champions League winner has been utilised as Arteta’s striker amid Arsenal’s struggles to locate an out-and-out number nine, but his role might be about to change.

Mikel Arteta ready to test Kai Havertz’s versatility
Despite spending almost 100 days of action due to a hamstring injury, Havertz is still Arsenal’s top scorer in the Premier League.
Such is a concern in itself, which is why it’s likely that the Gunners will bring in a goalscorer in the summer, as Viktor Gyokeres is linked with a transfer to the Emirates.
If Gyokeres were to come in, Havertz’s role would be certain to change, and before the Germany international’s return from injury, Arteta hinted at where he could play next term.
“One of the biggest qualities with Kai is his versatility and his goal threat whenever he plays, and he’s so intelligent,” Arteta said in a press conference.
“He will play as a No. 9, he will play as an attacking midfielder, and he will be super important for us as a team.”
Arteta made it absolutely clear that regardless of who Arsenal purchase in the summer, the 25-year-old’s importance to the starting XI will not change.
Ahead of his return, Arteta lauded Havertz’s physical transformation, suggesting that the £65m signing is in the shape of his life, and soon, he might just hit the form of his life.
Havertz could be set for his best season at Arsenal
Arteta hinted that Havertz could play as a number ten next season, which could inspire the former Bayer Leverkusen star to revisit the highs of 2018/19.
That season, 20-year-old Havertz lit up the Bundesliga, predominantly playing in attacking midfield.
| Statistic | 2018/19 Bundesliga | 2024/25 Premier League |
| Goals | 17 | 9 |
| Assists | 3 | 3 |
| Shots per game | 2.6 | 2.4 |
| Key passes per game | 1 | 0.7 |
| Dribbles per game | 1.4 | 0.4 |
It was a record-breaking season for the now-Arsenal star, who contributed to a total of 27 goals operating in the role in behind the striker.
Havertz ended the season as the youngest player in Europe’s top five leagues to score as many as 17 league goals, telling of his potency when assigned to the number ten position.
Arteta would be missing a trick if he didn’t give Havertz a run in Martin Odegaard’s role, as those in the Bundesliga know all too well what the German can do.
Now five years older, physically stronger and acclimatised to the Premier League, it’s scary to think what Arsenal could get out of Havertz with a position tweak next term.
