Arsenal have made the decision to push to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea to compete with David Raya.

Once again, Arsenal have looked at their London rivals for a transfer.

Mikel Arteta has signed Willian, Kai Havertz, Jorginho and Raheem Sterling since becoming Arsenal manager.

Though the signings have a concerningly low success rate at the Emirates, the acquisition of Kepa is already largely different, with the Spaniard set to arrive to significantly bolster the Arsenal squad

David Raya must be wary of how Kepa Arrizabalaga reacted to being dropped by Chelsea

Chelsea are about to lose a lot of money on Kepa after signing the goalkeeper for a record-breaking fee of £71.6m in 2018.

Arsenal will sign Kepa for just £5m following his loan spell at Bournemouth, with the 30-year-old set to arrive at the perfect time as Neto returns to the Cherries.

After spending the 2024/25 season knowing he had no competition, David Raya will have a different level to compete with in 2025/26, and Kepa is not one to shy away from fighting for the top spot.

Frank Lampard dropped the Spain international from Chelsea’s starting XI in 2020, a decision that shocked many, including Kepa.

Despite being usurped by Edouard Mendy at Stamford Bridge, the goalkeeper didn’t lose his cool, as he told the media shortly after Lampard’s decision.

“I feel good, strong and confident,” Kepa said on international duty in October 2020 in response to competition.

“[It’s] maybe not the dream and expected situation. We have to experience things like this during our careers as footballers. I need to carry on working calmly.”

The soon-to-be Arsenal shot-stopper then insisted he was ‘confident’ in turning his fate at Chelsea around, something that Raya will be wary of.

“I am confident to turn the situation around. When I have the opportunity to play, I will try to do the best possible.”

Kepa won’t sign for Arsenal to accept his place as number two, and despite Raya having a remarkable season, the Gunners’ number one mustn’t get too comfortable.

Kepa is a sensational signing for Arsenal

Just as Raya has improved at Arsenal, Kepa has improved in key areas since his downfall at Chelsea.

After putting together strong loan spells at Real Madrid and Bournemouth, the ‘keeper will be confident in his quest to attempt to overturn the power at Arsenal.

Raya had some concerning moments in the latter stages of the 2024/25 campaign, which were mostly caused by complacency, something Kepa’s arrival will oust.

The move is a remarkably good one from Arsenal, who will recruit a top-quality goalkeeper for peanuts to push Raya to offer only his very best.
