Arsene Wenger never really had a lot of money to spend when he was at the helm at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta is set to face a similar problem now after the Gunners dropped out of Europe for the first time in over a quarter of a century.
Arsenal will have to be very wise in this transfer window. We cannot splash money around like Chelsea or Manchester City, but if a recent report is to be believed, Edu is looking to fork out a fortune to sign a player we don’t really need.
The Athletic revealed a few days ago that Arsenal are really interested in Brighton and Hove Albion star Ben White. It was claimed that an official approach to sign the Englishman was imminent, but do Arsenal really need him?
Yes, White is one of the finest talents England have at the moment, yes, he has the quality to become one of the best defenders in the country, and yes, he will be a real star if he joins a bigger club in the very near future.
However, he could reportedly cost a fee as high as £50 million this summer. That is a lot of money to spend on a player who plays in a position where we have enough cover already.
Arsenal should trust Calum Chambers instead of signing Ben White
One of White’s biggest selling points is his versatility. He is naturally a centre-half, but he is more than capable of playing at right-back and in defensive midfield. That kind of versatility is incredible to have for a manager, but Arsenal already have that.
Chambers, who has been at the Emirates for eight years now, can play in all of the above positions. Injuries have hampered his progress, but when he’s fully fit, he is an absolutely outstanding player – just look at his performances at right-back in the back end of last season.
The Englishman hasn’t played in defensive midfield for a while now, but he is more than capable. He won the Player of the Year award at Fulham after a stunning campaign as a number six when he was on loan there.
Mikel Arteta should listen to Arsene Wenger’s assessment of Calum Chambers
Wenger, the man who signed Chambers as a teenager back in 2014, predicted six years ago that the former Saints man can definitely have a future as a defensive midfielder for Arsenal.
He said in 2015, as per Arsenal.com: “Calum Chambers has been educated as a central midfielder. He has played in defensive positions so I think he can develop in the future in a position like defensive-midfield.
“It is very important to balance our team. So, the defensive role and the efficiency in this position is very important because we are a team who like to go forward. All teams need a strong, reliable player in every defensive aspect.”
Wenger saw this almost six years ago and it would be wise of Arteta to see the same now. White would definitely be a phenomenal signing, but Chambers can fill that role well enough, and that will save Arsenal about £50 million this summer.
