Mikel Arteta should make ruthless Leandro Trossard decision after what he has just done at Arsenal

Leandro Trossard has had a difficult season at Arsenal.

The Belgium international has had to play in a few different positions this season because of injuries to other players. That has affected him, but he hasn’t been great in his natural left-wing role either.

Trossard has scored just four goals and provided three assists in 28 appearances for Arsenal this season. That is not good enough.

Now, the 30-year-old has done something that will not go down well with Arsenal fans.

Leandro Trossard makes Arsenal contract decision

Arsenal signed Trossard from Brighton and Hove Albion in January 2023.

The versatile forward became a big hit at the Emirates very quickly. His contributions off the bench as well as from the start were excellent in his first few months.

Trossard was very good last season as well. He scored 17 goals in all competitions despite only starting 25 games. That is a solid return for a player who mostly played out wide.

Arteta clearly likes Trossard and he has stuck by him this season despite his poor form. However, the Arsenal number 19 has done something that could irk everyone at the club.

Reports have revealed that Trossard rejected a new contract at Arsenal ‘immediately’ after it was offered to him.

The Gunners offered to extend his current deal, which expires in 2026, by a further year with an option of another 12 months – effectively securing his future until 2028.

It was claimed that both parties were ‘unhappy’ – Arsenal, because he rejected the offer, and Trossard, probably because he didn’t like the terms of the deal.

Arteta should sell Trossard this summer

Trossard’s next contract will likely be the final big deal of his career, so we understand why he would want a better offer than the one that was on the table.

However, the Belgian’s performances this season have just not been good enough, and the fact that he is already on the wrong side of 30 means it makes no sense to go above and beyond to retain him.

We know Arteta rates Trossard very highly, but we think the Arsenal manager has to be ruthless with his decisions. Offering him a new deal was a good move, but now that it has been turned down, it’s time to move on.

Arsenal should sell Trossard this summer, when he enters the final year of his deal. Cashing in on him and replacing him with someone like Nico Williams would be a smart move.
