Striker Arsene Wenger compared to Robbie Fowler is now a free agent, Arsenal should sign him

Arsenal are in the middle of their biggest injury crisis in years.

Mikel Arteta hasn’t had a fully fit squad available at his disposal at any point this season. He will have players out until the end of the campaign as well.

Gabriel Jesus’s season is over after he ruptured his ACL, and to make things worse, Kai Havertz has suffered a season-ending injury too.

Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka are also currently sidelined, which has left Arsenal with just three fit attackers – Leandro Trossard, Raheem Sterling and Ethan Nwaneri.

Arsenal will either have to turn to their academy for help or dive into the free-agent market to sign a new forward until the end of the campaign.

We have a suggestion for Arteta.

Arsenal can re-sign Carlos Vela on a free transfer

Carlos Vela spent six-and-a-half years on Arsenal’s books after joining the club as a teenager in 2006.

The Mexican was well appreciated by the Emirates faithful after he got over his issues with work permit and was able to play for the Gunners.

Vela made 62 appearances for Arsenal and directly contributed to 19 goals. Arsene Wenger was a big fan of the attacker, so much so that he compared him to a Liverpool legend.

“Vela is a fantastic talent,” Wenger told The Independent in 2009. “I believe he is a Robbie Fowler-type. He needs very little time to make a decision in the box.”

Now, Vela is a free agent after leaving LAFC at the turn of the year.

Arsenal are really short of options in attack at the moment. They cannot find world-class quality right now, but the least they can do is bring in an experienced body.

Vela checks that box if he can prove his fitness. We think he’s worth a punt until the end of the season.

Carlos Vela could solve two problems at Arsenal

Arsenal’s board are to blame for their problems right now.

The Gunners have been in need of a new striker for years now, while Saka hasn’t had a proper backup on the right-wing for several seasons as well.

Vela is 35 and hasn’t played for a while, but the Mexican can play as a striker as well as on the right wing comfortably.

If Arsenal do bring him back, he will solve the problems in those two positions in attack, which would be a big help for Arteta until the end of the season.

However, it is extremely unlikely that this move will happen.
