For much of this season, Manchester City have awaited the return of star midfielder Rodri as they look to keep pace with Arsenal at the summit of the table.

The Spanish midfielder was undoubtedly the best midfielder in the world before his cruel injury and it’s little wonder Pep Guardiola has been so keen to get him back.

Now back in the action, City will hope that Rodri will inspire them to their usual late season run.

However, while Rodri’s return is big and Arsenal will rightfully be looking on at what impact he has, this time around, the Gunners also have their own ace in the pack.

Step forward, Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz’s return could be bigger than Rodri’s in the Premier League title race

It’s been a rotten season so far for Kai Havertz.

An injury picked up in August has ruled him out all season and he only made his comeback in the 4-1 win over Portsmouth this past weekend.

However, we only needed to see that 21 minute cameo at Fratton Park for Havertz to show us just what Arsenal have been missing.

Time and again during that cameo, he came and received the ball deep to set attacks up. More worrying for Viktor Gyokeres, Havertz’s movement in behind was also excellent, as he caused Pompey’s defence countless problems.

For Havertz, it was just a small glimpse of what he brings to the table and if he keeps fit and improves further, it is like a new January signing for Arsenal.

Last season, Havertz contributed 15 goals and five assists in a fine season for the Gunners.

Now, with the season entering its crucial stage once again, Havertz coming back as an option for Mikel Arteta could be a decisive factor in the title race and ultimately, a bigger bonus than Rodri’s own return at The Etihad.

What Kai Havertz said about his return to playing for Arsenal

There is absolutely no doubt that having Kai Havertz back gives Arsenal fresh impetus in the title race.

When so many teams are looking at the January market to add new faces, getting a player back that you paid over £60m for is a new signing in itself.

Indeed, Havertz is also keen to show what he’s worth now he is back and he admitted after Portsmouth that he is delighted to be back competing.

“It’s a special feeling, it’s amazing for myself. I’m just happy to be back with the boys and I hope I can help them as much as possible now,” Havertz said.

“I think the way the boys have played the last couple of months, it was so nice even to watch from the outside, even though it’s always very hard to be in a situation like this. But just to watch them was amazing and I’m very happy to be with them now.”

With plenty of football to be played and Arsenal competing on four fronts, Havertz will end up playing a crucial role if he stays fit.

And if he does stay fit, it’s hard to see the title landing anywhere else but at The Emirates.
