Three reasons why Arsenal must sell Leandro Trossard over Gabriel Martinelli this summer

Arsenal are now turning their attentions to selling players following their busy transfer activity so far this summer.

Viktor Gyokeres became Arsenal’s sixth signing of the summer when he arrived in a £63m deal from Sporting Lisbon.

So far, Andrea Berta has managed just one permanent sale in the form of Nuno Tavares to Lazio and that needs to change before the end of the window.

Whilst the club are in talks to sell both Reiss Nelson and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Fulham, there is a feeling that one of Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli will also depart. There are clear reasons why it should be the Belgian.

Three reasons why Leandro Trossard should be sold over Gabriel Martinelli at Arsenal

Both players have rotated on the left wing for the Gunners during pre-season, much as they did during the last campaign.

Arsenal are struggling with their creativity at present and the dynamic on the left flank is part of the problem.

With the club interested in the likes of Eberechi Eze and Rodrygo to improve their attacking firepower, player sales are required to fund those moves. Here are three reasons why Trossard should be the man to go.

Leandro Trossard’s best years are behind him

The most obvious reason is the age of the Belgium international compared to his Brazilian teammate. Trossard at 30 is entering the twilight of his career, whereas Martinelli still has his peak ahead of him.

Martinelli burst onto the scene at Arsenal at a very young age and it can be easy to forget that he is still only 23 and learning the game.

Whilst Trossard is still an asset to this Arsenal squad, his impact may soon be on the decline and the time is now to cash in for the Gunners.

Borussia Dortmund are interested in Trossard and the club would be wise to negotiate a deal for him whilst his value is still high.

Gabriel Martinelli offers pace to the Arsenal attack

In terms of goals and assists, there was little to separate Trossard and Martinelli last season and both players have consistently chipped in during their time at the club.

Whether their numbers are enough to propel Arsenal to a league title is another question. What Martinelli does offer in relation to his teammate is raw pace.

The Gunners have been at their best over the years when they cut teams apart on the counter attack with their incisive passing and frightening speed.

Martinelli has welcomed competition for his place in the side and his pace may be a weapon both domestically and in Europe as Arsenal chase an elusive trophy next season.

Gabriel Martinelli has shown more versatility than Leandro Trossard

Both players were required to play in multiple positions last season as was the extent of Arsenal’s injury crisis.

Trossard failed to make an impact in any position other than his favoured left wing, whereas Martinelli showed real promise as a central striker against champions Liverpool.

Whilst the Brazilian is obviously behind Gyokeres and Kai Havertz in the pecking order for the number nine position, his ability to play there when required is another feather in his cap.

Martinelli also played a handful of games on the right hand side and picked up an assist in the Premier League clash away at Crystal Palace.

Supporters would be sad to see either of the Gunners forwards depart the club this summer, however, there is a clear need for more creativity in Arteta’s side.

If sacrificing the sale of one of Trossard or Martinelli meant that Arsenal could acquire more inventiveness in the final third, the decision would be vindicated.
