Viktor Gyokeres should be fired up for Man City clash after hearing what Pep Guardiola once said about him

Arsenal take on Manchester City in the Premier League, and Viktor Gyokeres will want to prove a point.

The Sweden international joined the Gunners from Sporting CP in the summer, and he has had a good start to the season.

Three goals in five games is not a bad return by any means, but Gyokeres is yet to get off the mark for Arsenal against a big side.

The game against Manchester City will give Gyokeres the opportunity to make a statement, and what Pep Guardiola once said about him should fire him up.

What Pep Guardiola once said about signing Viktor Gyokeres for Manchester City

Viktor Gyokeres was the most prolific striker in the world during his time at Sporting CP.

The striker scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese giants, and he was linked with a number of clubs across Europe.

Arsenal ended up signing Gyokeres, but Manchester United were also keen to sign him and pushed until the end for his signature.

But what about Manchester City?

Back in November last year, ahead of a game between Sporting and City in the Champions League, Guardiola was asked if he would like a striker like Gyokeres in his team.

The Spaniard bluntly replied, as per Mais Futebol: “We have Erling Haaland, the best striker in the world!”

That should light a fire in Gyokeres’ belly ahead of the game against Manchester City on Sunday – he will want to show Guardiola that he is right up there with Haaland.

Viktor Gyokeres has already embarrassed Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland

Haaland is the best striker in the world, and that has been the case for a few years now.

Guardiola was right to back his man when Gyokeres’ name was put in front of him, but the Manchester City boss’ comments backfired very quickly.

In the game between Sporting and City on the very next day, Gyokeres scored a brilliant hat-trick and helped his side pick up a 4-1 win.

Haaland, on the other hand, had just 15 touches of the ball all game and failed to score or assist.

Gyokeres won the battle back in November, and Arsenal fans will be hoping that he can do it again when he faces Guardiola’s men at the Emirates on Sunday.
