Wayne Rooney believes that Eberechi Eze was rather underwhelming during Arsenal’s win over Inter Milan, but the winger actually made a strong claim to start more often.
After the match, the Italian media praised Eze’s performance, whereas the former Premier League striker said he missed the chance to stake a claim to start for Arsenal.
Fill in the blank: _______________ should start in the number ten role vs Man United…
Eze or Odegaard…
It was a great night for the Gunners, who won 3-1 to make it seven wins from seven in the Champions League this season.
Gabriel Jesus netted a brace, and then Viktor Gyokeres came off the bench to seal yet another win for Mikel Arteta’s team.
One of the players who really stood out during the win was Eze; however, Rooney seemed to think quite the opposite.
Wayne Rooney questions Eberechi Eze during Inter Milan 1-3 Arsenal
Wayne Rooney has questioned Eberechi Eze’s performance against Inter Milan and believes it was a missed opportunity for the Arsenal star.
The ex-Man United man claims that he wants to see more from the 27-year-old and is unlikely to start at the weekend now.
Rooney told Sports on Prime Video: “I think I would have liked to have seen a little bit more from Eze. I don’t think he had the best of games.
Be honest. What did you think about Eberechi Eze’s performance during Inter Milan vs Arsenal?
Hit or miss?
“So these games are about taking your opportunity, and like Gabriel Jesus has put himself in line to start the game on Sunday.
“So, and that’s all you can do. A little bit disappointed that Eze didn’t perform at the level we know he can do.”
Eze has started on the bench in each of Arsenal’s last six Premier League games, and Rooney suggests the same should happen against United this weekend.
Wayne Rooney is seriously wrong about Eberechi Eze
However, Rooney is wrong about Eze’s display, as despite not having a huge number of touches, Arsenal’s attacking play looked so much better with him on the field.
Arsenal fans were impressed by Eze, hailing his directness in possession, as the former Crystal Palace star always looked to play forward.
Sometimes, Martin Odegaard can frustrate fans by looking for the safe option with his passing, whereas Eze was always brave at the San Siro.
But this is where Arteta needs to utilise his options, as following a small drop off from Odegaard, Eze can now take his place and force him to lift his game.
The Spanish manager should now be looking to start the midfielder again against Manchester United at the weekend.
