We need to have an uncomfortable conversation about Viktor Gyokeres at Arsenal

It was yet another memorable evening at the Emirates Stadium for Arsenal as they defeated Bayern Munich; however, one person who might have left N5 slightly worried is Viktor Gyokeres.

The 27-year-old had to watch on as the Gunners swamped one of the best teams in Europe to maintain their perfect start to the Champions League.

Goals from Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke ensured that the Gunners’ perfect start to the Champions League continued, with five wins from five matches.

The North Londoners have now produced two of their best performances of the season without their new number nine, and this could be a cause for concern.

Arsenal might be better without Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal might actually be a better team without Viktor Gyokeres in the line-up, which is what their last two performances have shown.

Gyokeres is currently recovering from a hamstring injury, which has sidelined him since the start of November.

During that time, the Gunners have beaten both Tottenham and Bayern, whilst earning a draw away at Sunderland.

There is a case to be made that Mikel Arteta’s team could have done with the Swede at the Stadium of Light, but it’s clear that was not the case against Spurs or Bayern.

Mikel Merino has led the line in the two games at the Emirates, with the Spaniard often interchanging with Eberechi Eze.

The England international appears to have been given greater freedom to get into more advanced positions with Gyokeres not in the team.

In turn, we have started to see the best of Eze, who, of course, netted a sensational hat-trick against Tottenham in the North London derby.

Gyokeres is expected to be available very soon, but at this stage, Arteta certainly won’t have any plans to rush him back into the team.

Viktor Gyokeres could return against Chelsea

Speaking ahead of the Bayern Munich clash, Arteta revealed that Gyokeres could return against Chelsea on the weekend.

The Arsenal boss told the media: “Feelings are really good for both Gyokeres and Havertz. In the next few days, they are going to have a repeat scan to see if we can push them for the weekend.”

Who is Arsenal’s first choice striker when everyone is fit?

Having Kai Havertz back would be a huge boost, as initial fears had arisen that the German attacker had suffered an injury setback and was due to be sidelined until the New Year.
