What David Raya just said reinforces why Aaron Ramsdale was axed by Arsenal

Mikel Arteta got a lot of stick for replacing Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya, but the difficult decision paid off.

Arsenal haven’t looked back since offloading Ramsdale, with Raya developing into one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Though Arteta has a lot of respect for Ramsdale, the Arsenal boss was right to pull the plug on the Englishman’s time in the starting XI.

Several things brought Ramsdale to the end of his Arsenal career, one of which was his comments on concentration.

David Raya makes an opposing claim to Aaron Ramsdale when talking about concentration levels

In a 2023 interview with the Premier League, Ramsdale bizarrely admitted that he can’t concentrate for 90 minutes of a match.

“If you ask me to concentrate on a game of football for 90 minutes, I’m finished. I can’t do it,” the former Arsenal goalkeeper said.

“So that’s why I get involved with the fans, and I’ll sing along with the songs. Someone is giving me abuse, and I’ll turn round and give them a bit back.

“I’ve had my two or three minutes of madness in my head and then straight back to the football. I’ve got 10/15 minutes of pure concentration again.”

The goalkeeper’s admission was staggering, even more so when hearing what his successor just said.

Speaking in the mixed zone after Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid, Raya was asked if he ever gets bored between the sticks, given how good the Gunners’ defence is.

“Do you sometimes think maybe I should bring a book along and a puzzle?” A reporter joked.

“No. No. You never know. You never know when the other team is going to have a chance like they did today,” Raya responded.

“They had a few chances where we were lucky not to concede. So we have to be alert no matter how we’re playing or how we play. So I have to be alert for 90 minutes every game.”

Raya’s comment on concentration was the polar opposite of Ramsdale’s foolish words two years ago, reinforcing exactly why Arteta didn’t hesitate to switch his number ones.

How much has Ramsdale played this season?

Arteta made the right decision when axing Ramsdale, but by doing so, the Spaniard really threw a spanner in the works of the Englishman’s career.

After leaving Arsenal, Ramsdale suffered relegation with Southampton, leading him to leave on loan for the 2025/26 season, joining Newcastle.

Since joining the Magpies, things haven’t gone to plan, as Nick Pope is firmly Eddie Howe’s number one, limiting the goalkeeper’s minutes.

The former Arsenal man has played only 90 minutes this season, which came in the Carabao Cup tie against Bradford.

With the World Cup in sight, Ramsdale is out of Thomas Tuchel’s plans at present, which doesn’t look likely to change anytime soon.

It’s been a punishing time for Arsenal’s former number one, but at the Emirates, there’s been no looking back.
