Why Emmanuel Petit is completely wrong with his latest Arsenal transfer recommendation

Emmanuel Petit is a well respected and highly successful figure of Arsenal’s past but even the very best can get things wrong.

Petit was a huge success under Arsene Wenger and has gone on to forge a career in punditry since, often turning his attentions to Arsenal.

As we all know, the World Cup is in focus at the moment but alongside that, potential Arsenal signings are also being discussed.

But while we all know Arsenal need a new midfielder and want a new left winger, Petit’s latest suggestion is a bit baffling.

Emmanuel Petit’s recommendation of Nico Williams is all wrong for Arsenal

Spanish winger Nico Williams was one of the hottest properties in world football at one point. Coming out of Euro 2024, he was one of the most in-demand wingers in the world.

Indeed, Petit has claimed on TalkSPORT that Williams should be Arsenal’s next signing.

“For me, the most important actually, of course, they probably have to to add more players in the midfield area, but for me, the most important is out wide.

“You know, as I said before, wingers, especially left wingers for me, Nico Williams will be the perfect target,” Petit commented.

However, if Arsenal are seeking to upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, then Williams’ stats don’t do his cause any good.

The last three seasons have yielded just 15 goals for the Spanish winger. This, despite his prominence for Atletico Bilbao as the main man in the team.

In addition, Williams has also contributed just the nine assists over the last two seasons. He did manage 13 back in the 23/24 season but since then, his form has dipped massively.

Indeed, going into the World Cup, Williams isn’t even a starter for Spain, with others preferred. There are question marks from manager La Fuentes over certain aspects of his game, something Arsenal must also consider.

Sure enough, some may argue that at just 23, Williams has all the right attributes for Mikel Arteta to work his magic and improve him further.

But right now, Arsenal need players who are guaranteed to improve the first XI.

Sadly, Williams does not do that right now and while Petit fancies him, we question just what the Frenchman is seeing.
