The Athletic revealed earlier this week that Arsenal will only sign Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia if a deal for Martin Odegaard cannot be completed.
That confused a few Arsenal supporters on social media. Odegaard is an out-and-out number 10, while Buendia has played on the right-wing all season. That doesn’t really add up, does it?
Well, Buendia has come out and had his say on his preferred position on the pitch, and his comments explain why Mikel Arteta wants to sign him to replace Odegaard in attacking midfield.
Buendia: I’m most comfortable as a number 10
He told AS: “My position was always 10, hook, between the middle and the forward.
“I was always a passer, but in a professional way, I played more outside and always with the freedom to be able to associate. But where I feel most comfortable is in the middle, where I can touch the ball more and associate with my teammates.
“I look a lot in England on Kevin De Bruyne or Bruno Fernandes, who are decisive in their teams and among the best in the world.”
Can Buendia replace Odegaard at Arsenal?
Since joining Norwich in 2018, Buendia has played as a number 10 just once, that too for just 15 minutes. (Transfermarkt) All of the Argentine’s success in English football has come from the right-wing and that is his best position in many people’s eyes.
However, the one thing he has shown during his time in England is that he can create chances. That shouldn’t change if he is moved to a more central role, and the fact that he is capable of scoring regularly makes him an excellent option as well.
Arsenal will only sign one of Odegaard or Buendia this summer. The latter is the more versatile option, but if reports are to be believed, the Real Madrid man is Arteta’s first choice, which means that the Gunners boss has some reservations over the Argentine.
It all depends on Real Madrid and Odegaard now. If a deal cannot be arranged there, Arsenal will make a move for Buendia, and the Argentine will come in and replace the Norwegian in attacking midfield.
