David Ornstein has revealed on The Athletic that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Edu are big fans of Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia, but the Gunners have him second on their wish list behind Martin Odegaard.
The Norwegian joined Arsenal on loan from Real Madrid in January and he has been a huge hit. He doesn’t have a lot to shout about in terms of goal involvements – just two goals and two assists – but he has been magnificent.
Odegaard fits Arteta’s system perfectly. He checks all the boxes that the Gunners boss is looking for, but signing him will not be easy.
Arteta revealed yesterday that discussions with Real Madrid about a permanent deal will take place in the coming weeks. However, he admitted that nothing is in Arsenal’s hands at the moment. (Read here)
Norwich are ready to sell Arsenal target Emiliano Buendia
Ornstein has revealed in his weekly article that Arteta and Edu could make a move for Buendia this summer, but only if a deal for Odegaard cannot be completed.
The Argentine has had a stunning season for the Canaries. His 15 goals and 17 assists played a massive part in helping them achieve promotion back into the Premier League, and if the report is to be believed, Norwich have accepted that he is destined to join a bigger club this summer.
It is claimed that both Buendia and the Canaries feel it is the right time to part ways. Norwich expect him to be sold this summer, but they will not accept any bid less than £40 million.
That is a lot of money for a player who has played most of his football in the Championship, but they believe that his age, profile, statistics and experience in England make that the right fee to demand for him.
It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming weeks. Both Odegaard and Buendia will be involved with their countries this summer, which will likely delay any negotiations. That should give Arteta and Edu enough time to decide who they want to sign – the Norwegian or the Norwich City man.
