Arsenal-linked Josh Doig says he idolises Kieran Tierney

The Sun reported last month that Arsenal had joined Leicester and Manchester City in the race to sign Hibernian’s teenage left-back Josh Doig.

The Gunners’ only natural option at left full-back at the moment is Kieran Tierney. The Scotsman is undoubtedly one of the best in his position in the Premier League, but his injury history is really concerning, and Arsenal need to bring in a backup.

Doig is a really interesting option. Labelled as ‘terrific’ by ex-Scotland international John Collins, the teenager has been fantastic for Hibs in the Scottish top-flight this season.

His performances have been so good that he was given the SFWA Young Player of the Year award this week – an accolade that Tierney won three times in succession before joining Arsenal in the summer of 2019.

Doig has now revealed he grew up idolising Tierney and has admitted that he wants to emulate the Arsenal man in the future as well.

Doig: I grew up watching Kieran Tierney

He said, as quoted by The Herald: “Growing up Kieran Tierney was one [I liked to watch]. Going to watch games, I always liked to watch him. He was so young but he always had that heart and desire, that aggression about him that was very inspiring.

“You could tell he was going to go far and what he is doing at Arsenal now is absolutely mental. He’s someone you want to idolise because of what he has done in his career already. He’s just someone that young left-backs in Scotland should be idolising.

“He is such a hard-working person and has that drive that you don’t see so much now. He was at Celtic for a few seasons and was so consistent. That was his main thing and it’s something I am trying to bring to my game, week in week out. He was playing brilliantly, scoring goals and assists too.”

The Insider’s View:

If Arsenal really are interested, Tierney’s presence should give us an edge. Every young player in the world would love to share the dressing room with his/her idol, and Doig will be no different.

Arsenal desperately need a backup left-back this summer. We’ve seen over the last few weeks how much we struggle without Tierney in the side. We just can’t afford to go into the new season without a natural second-choice there.

The ideal signing would be someone who can come in and fight with Tierney to be the first choice. However, Doig will not be a bad option at all, especially as we will not be playing a game every three days next season like we did this term.
