The Daily Mail revealed last week that Arsenal were battling Aston Villa to sign ex-Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli on a free transfer.

The Gunners need to bring in a new shot-stopper this summer to provide competition to Bernd Leno. Reports have claimed that Mikel Arteta is looking for a home-grown option between the sticks, and that is the reason behind our interest in Aaron Ramsdale.

However, the Sheffield United star will cost a ton of money this summer. Arsenal viewed Bettinelli as a cheaper option who checked all the boxes we were looking for, but the 29-year-old has joined Chelsea now.

Arsenal never stood a chance in the race to sign Bettinelli

Even though the chances of playing are a lot higher at Arsenal, Bettinelli was never going to join us for one key reason.

In his first interview as a new Chelsea player, he revealed that a move to Stamford Bridge has always been a dream for him. His comments hint that Arsenal never really had any chance of signing him this summer, mainly due to his love for the Blues.

He told Chelsea’s official website: “It’s always been a special club. I know the area very well, so, it’s been a dream of mine to come over to this side, and it’s finally happened. There were some talks a few years ago when I was a bit younger and for whatever reason, that didn’t come about. But, I’m here now.”

What next for Arsenal?

Arsenal are still on the market for a new goalkeeper and it is pretty clear that Ramsdale is our number one target. Most fans don’t really get the reason behind our push for him, but Arteta and Edu clearly see something in him.

However, Sheffield United are asking for a lot of money for Ramsdale. The Star claimed that the Blades value him at a staggering £40 million, which makes no sense considering that he has been relegated from the Premier League in each of his last two seasons.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming weeks. Arsenal will surely bring in a new goalkeeper and it is looking very likely that it will be Ramsdale, but with someone like Andre Onana still on the market, Edu could still spring a surprise.
